Having heard that Gabbi would be parading her Whoremoans at a free accoustic gig in the Green Dragon i made my way along. After all i'd asked them to play at my birthday without ever seeing them live. I needed to make sure that i hadn't made a mistake (I haven't, but more on that later).
First things first and i introduced myself to the band during the sound-check. Having been in Croydon anyway i decided to just go along early. The sound-check was enough to prove several things to me. The band was good enough; the bassist was a bit good also, particularly considering his age; and that i need to be able to play at one of these nights. The performers get free food and drink all night.
So, a couple of beers later and the running order having been negotiated we were treated to the musical musings of Gaz Twist, Blue Rose Code, Joan Coffey and Shakersoul. I would love to comment on all of them but sadly i can't because i was too busy going up and down stairs and not paying close enough attention. I can inform you that everything i heard that night was impressive, if you like calm folkey accoustic sets.
Anyway, 9:30 came about and Gabbi and the Whoremoans took to the stage. As a visual spectacle alone they're quite something. Gabbi is all big spikey boots, colourful hair and sparkly make-up, the bassist Spud sporting a Led Zeppelin t-shirt and Oz (lead guitar) sporting what could be called "the vintage look". In truth it just adds to the interest. What also becomes clear very quickly is that they really enjoy playing together and that Gabbi has a very strong voice.
A particular highlight is the cover of Hotel California, but the set is generally very impressive indeed. The combination of covers and original material is well balanced, and leaves the audience in no doubt that this is a band who know exactly where they've come from and with any luck a band who will go a long way indeed.
As mentioned above, their next gig will be at the Cartoon on September 20th. It's absolutely free, so there isn't any excuse for not going. They're playing alongside Feel Free Mind, and hopefully Gold-digger (to be confirmed later today).
