This makes Lou mad!!!!!This is kinda London / Croydon related, but everyone is welcome to join in the chat...
What the hell is going on?
First The Harp closes it's doors (I'm told it's now been bought and is either going to be a shop or flats!)...
Then we're told that the Astoria is going...
Now, we're told that the Intrepid Fox is going!
We're gonna run out of places to go soon!

PoxyThere'll always be new places popping up, keep your ear to the ground.
Problem being I think in todays rock culture, is everyone seems to like going out on the cheap, say for example, a weatherspoons or a firkin pub before moving on to the establishment of choice already inhebreated to cut their expenditure. So you your much loved establishment doesn't get the revenues it deserves. Well thats my theory anyway.

You're probably right there.
So, we need a good venue that'll sell drinks at Wetherspoons' prices... but I think that would make ticket prices go up...

There are a couple of issues that i can see (other than the one mentioned, which is true).
1) People are much more willing to go and have a laugh in a pub which is alternative, or go to gigs than they are willing to actually go and help to run these kinds of events. I'm not pointing fingers because everyone i know from this forum is innocent of this charge. I think generally though people take things for granted, and when they're gone they complain.
2) The cost of land means that it's really very hard to justify keeping a venue the size of the Astoria and Mean Fiddler open in central London. I'm still not convinced that the Astoria is going (because the only place i've heard about it is on myspace... so i'm sceptical), but the price of the land would make it very hard to resist developers. This means that the inner cities will always be harder to run any alternative club/bar of a good size in.
Those are the 2 issues i can see, apart from the rise of the cheap pre-drinks.

This is very true... and oddly... and excellently... it means that venues outside of London may get a chance to prove themselves! I'd really like The Cartoon to become well-known (for the right reasons!).

Unfortunately the Cartoon just seems to trundle along, it's a nice venue and has soo much potential, but alas there is no drive there. I know some bands that are popular, have passed through there "on the way up" eg Flaw, Reuben....
I'd play there every week! If they'd have us LOL

I know! They really don't promote it enough. I think that it's good that they make bands promote themselves, but they (the people at The Cartoon) should make an effort and promote things a bit themselves. I know that Noel, the previous owner, used to occasionally get things in the Kerrang gig guide, but they don't even do that anymore (well, not that I've noticed). I think they should set up an advert - much like what The Underworld does - where it shows select gigs that are coming up in the next month and the website address and get it put in Metal Hammer, Kerrang and wherever else will take 'em. I doubt it would cost that much to do either. Hell, I'd even design one! I'd also happily put one in ARSE

There is indeed potential there! Nice stage, spacious environment, a safe distance from the turgid central croydon epicentre!

Something that should be put on the advert perhaps!

Far enough from central Croydon, but the Cartoon is hardly in the sweetest of areas...
I think Matt (who took over from Noel) has made a fair bit of effort... getting some more high profile acts down there. He's welcomed various local promoters, myself included, which i think works well as long as people are reliable.
It's not perfect, and the Cartoon still suffers from a poor reputation, particularly with some younger bands as i see it. Shame though that is, it'll take time to fix.

I've been in there when the sound's been good... I've also been in there when the sound's been terrible.

Agreed. I think the sound system isn't bad. Certainly good enough to fill the venue. The engineers are pretty average sometimes though, but getting a good sound engineer means that the sound is usually good.

I wanna play there again, to see if there's any difference with particular nights, promoters, or engineers. I like venues that are consistant, venues don't have to be brilliant, just deliver an acceptable standard, then the bands can do the rest!
Besides I was well angry at the sound system/engineer when we played there, all of that effects your mental state before you play, NOT GOOD!
